The Feast of Pentecost, or Whitsunday
O God, who on this day didst teach the hearts of thy faithful people by sending to them the light of thy Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits of Christ Jesus our Savior, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the same Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

If you are visiting or new to the Advent, we hope that you will feel welcome and at home. Please join us after Mass for Coffee Hour downstairs in Moseley Hall, and, if you will, fill out a visitor’s/newcomer’s card so that we can keep in touch.

Portrait of Antonin Dvorak Antonín Dvořák, one of the great Czech nationalist composers of the nineteenth century, was the son of a butcher and innkeeper. Slowly and steadily his musical career advanced to become one of international recognition. In 1884 he made the first of nine visits to England where he became very popular as a composer and a conductor of his own works. In 1892 he set out for the United States; for three years he taught at the National Conservatory in New York City. It was during this time that his famous “New World” Symphony was composed. Constantly inspired by and drawn to Slovak cultures, his summers in the states were spent mostly in Spillville, Iowa, a small farming colony comprised of Czech settlers.

The Mass in D Major, op. 86, was commissioned by Josef Hlávka for the September 11, 1887 consecration of the private chapel of his castle at Lužany near Plzeň.  Hlávka was an architect and an artistic patron and founder of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts (for more about him, see below).  Dvořák himself conducted at the Mass of Consecration;  his wife Anna was the alto in the solo quartet which included Hlávka’s wife Zdenka singing soprano.  Originally scored simply for organ, chorus and solo quartet, the orchestration we hear this morning was added as a condition of publication by the English house of Novello in 1893 - the publisher Simrock twice turned down the piece prior to Novello’s conditional acceptance!  Immediately following completion of the work in June 1887, photo of Chateau LuzanyDvořák wrote to Hlávka to express his delight; he summed up the mass as one of “faith, hope and love to Almighty God.”  We offer the work this morning in the same spirit, with thanks to Selina Little whose great generosity has made it possible as a gift to the parish in memory of her parents.

Josef Hlávka, like Dvořák, was a self-made man from humble peasant roots. He became one of the leading architects of 19th century Vienna, designing the famous Vienna State Opera House, among many other commissions. Upon his death, he left his entire (and considerable) fortune to establish the Hlávka Foundation to provide money for poor Czech students. The Foundation is still in existence today, having survived both the Nazi and Communist régimes.
Lilac Time: The lilacs should be in their full glory (sight and smell!) at the Arnold Arboretum this morning! Why not join a group of parishioners for a picnic there following the Mass on the Feast of Pentecost. Pack a lunch and bring it with you to Church. Since it is Lilac Day, there will be vendors at the Arboretum selling cold drinks. For more information speak to one of the clergy, or to Abigail St. Hilaire, who is organizing this outing. On the Sunday itself, you may meet Abigail or her husband, Aaron Butt, at Coffee Hour and take the T to the Arboretum as a group.
Ockham’s Kegger continues! Mr Tyrus Clutter, Advent parishioner and Director of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA), continues with the last of four presentations on “The Philosophy of Modern Art” at The Hampshire House (above Cheers Bar) (84 Beacon Street, Boston) this Tuesday, May 13 . Why is it so difficult to comprehend modern and contemporary art? This series will track some of the major philosophical underpinnings of artwork produced during the last hundred years. From methods based in chance procedures, to appropriation of images, to incorporation of non-traditional materials, artists from recent decades have sought alternate paths to communicate about the most important topics that face humanity. Come explore some methods for entering the dialogue with contemporary art. So mark it down now, and get your brain itched, have a brew, and meet other thoughtful people at Ockham’s Kegger - Nothing Like a Pint to Help Simplify Complex Ideas! For more information, see the Ockham's Kegger Web page.

Thanks to all who walked as, and all who pledged to, Team Advent in last week’s Walk for Hunger. Over $1,400 were raised by the team! And a special thanks to the entire Gurnon family, Jack, Cassie, Sarah and Emilie who walked with the Rector the entire 20 miles!
Women's Fellowship group forming at the Advent! Are you interested in forming a deeper fellowship with other women of all ages at the Advent? We are in the process of developing an inter-generational fellowship group, open to all women, to begin meeting over the summer. For more information, please . We are working to coordinate an informational meeting and an opportunity to hear what the women at the Advent might want in such a group.
Calling all Swingers! The Advent Swingers are ready to play in the fourth season of the co-ed Boston Metro Church Softball League! All pledging members of the Advent who are at least 18 years of age are eligible to play. (Pledge cards are available at the back of the Church.) The fee to play is only $35 (which includes the cost of a jersey), far less than all other softball leagues in the Greater Boston area. So if you want to be a Swinger, please fill out the slip in the leaflet along with a check for $35 made out to The Church of the Advent, with Advent Swingers in the memo line, and mail to Fr Gray here at the church. Practices will begin in May (dates to be determined), and the first game will be Saturday, June 21. All games will take place after that on Saturdays until October 11.
Discount Parking Vouchers for the Boston Common Garage are available for $5 each from Nola Sheffer. You can find her between Masses at the Coffee Hour or Entr’acte. The vouchers can be used after 4 pm weekdays, and all day Saturday and Sunday. The current batch is valid through early February, 2009; more will be purchased when these have all been sold. The current coupons still cost only $5 because a large supply was purchased before the price increased on March 1. Questions? .
9:00 Coffee Hour: The hosts this morning are Jarvis & Marcia Coffin and Dick Edgar & Amy Gantt. Next week the hosts will be Ray Porter and Stephen & Rogina Jeffries.

11:15 Coffee Hour: Many thanks to all our Coffee Hour hosts, past, present, and future. We always welcome new volunteers, and we promise never to schedule hosts more than three times each year.
