Church School

Church School children with Bishop Cederholm

The Advent's Church School program is a busy and exciting environment for Christian education! Nobody is too young for Church School - we even have a class for infants and their parents, "Beulah Land."

Church School happens every week after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Following Communion, our Church School teachers meet all children ages 3 & up at the rear of the church and head up to the third floor. Infants and toddlers and their parents can attend "Beulah Land" class with Darcy Montaldi and Megan Zadig. We have "Godly Play" classes for ages 3-6 and 6-9, and a Scripture Study for ages 9-12. The Youth Class (ages 13-18) meets on the second floor. Read on for more information!

Paging System for Nursery and Godly Play:  The Advent has invested in a paging system for both the Nursery and the Godly Play floor (third floor).  Any parent who drops off a child in the Nursery or on the third floor will be given a pager, which is to be returned upon picking up the child.  During the 9 o'clock service, parents are to accompany their child(ren) to the back of the church to meet church school staff after Communion, and pagers will be distributed to parents at that time.

Beulah Land

Beulah Land is a Sunday School class for infants and toddlers (up to three years old) and their caregivers.  Besides singing and music, the Beulah Land curriculum is designed to help the very young and not-so-young develop a visual vocabulary of faith. It not only teaches children particular Bible stories, but also opens the whole world of Scripture and liturgy to their imaginations. The class meets on Sundays at 10:20 AM during the school year.

The name "Beulah Land" comes from Isaiah 62:4 (King James Version):

Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married.

"Beulah," the "married land," is the place where imagination is fertile and brings forth visions and dreams, and the place where mothers, fathers, and children are safe. We hope this class will help you and your children distill the varied imagery of Scripture into an imaginative whole, and make it part of your own inner world.

Godly Play

The Church of the Advent uses a Montessori-based curriculum called Godly Play. The goal of Godly Play is to teach children the art of using religious language – parable, sacred story, silence, and liturgical action – to help interpret the events of their daily lives. Godly Play teachers tell Bible stories using multi-sensory materials that encourage children to enter into the stories and relate them to their personal experiences. Our Godly Play classrooms are staffed by parishioners Meg Nelson and Liesl Smith (3-6 year-olds) and Julia Coffey and Sarah Connor (6-9 year-olds). The younger age group has story calendars and related projects, and the older children work on their own "long-term" projects as they fit in with the story calendar. All classes end at 11:10 am.

Scripture Study

New for 2008 is a Scripture Study class for children ages 9-12, led by Devon Abts. This class focuses on Bible knowledge and memorization, as well as understanding how the Scripture story fits together.

Youth Class

The Youth Class is led by Suzanne Miller, Mark McInroy, and Chris Jacobs. Our curriculum is called "Faith in Motion."
